The island has three distinct communities — Anna Maria (north), Holmes Beach (center), and Bradenton Beach (south) — each with its own character, road width, and parking challenges.

The city of Anna Maria at the north end features the oldest homes on the island. Many are original 1920s-1950s Florida cottages with low ceilings, narrow hallways, and screened porches. Standard-size furniture may not fit through the front door without removing legs or hardware.
